At this point, most people are either enthralled by the Kanye West/Taylor Swift incident at the VMAs Sunday night, or, wishing the whole charade would just dissipate. But maybe some are like me, wasting precious hours and minutes wondering if this whole thing was a carefully-crafted stunt, lead by the walking controversy that is Kanye.
You have to consider that within a short period of time, the egotism of Kanye West became legendary - a talented individual believing his outspoken ramblings and spotlight cravings should be at the forefront of everyone's minds. He feels unappreciated, rejected, disrespected, robbed, sad, angry and just plain bitter. And now, in this latest instance of his fight-for-fairness antics, West disguised his need for fame in that of a hero - someone fighting for the fairness of others (Beyonce, in this case) rather than himself.
Poor character, maybe, but it makes for superb entertainment. And he knows it.
And entertainment is what MTV yearns for anyway. Riding Kanye's boisterous personality is a surefire way to make headlines the next day, which is exactly what happened. Beyonce provided her shock-and-awe look, Swift stood there dumbfounded and distraught, and next thing you know, we had a delicious scandal guaranteed to boost CD sales and MTV viewership. What's a little disruption of your awards speech when it gets you extra screen time?
Believe what you will, but the best acceptance speech disruption of all time is still O.D.B.'s intrusion on Shawn Colvin during the Grammy Awards in 1998 - classic and hilarious, if for nothing else than it involving O.D.B. The one on Sunday night simply paled in comparison.
