Chris Brown's much-anticipated interview with Larry King finally aired Wednesday night (August 2), with the 20-year-old remorseful over the assault on his former girlfriend, Rihanna, and swearing he can't remember a thing about it.
"I'm in shock," a bow-tied Brown told King. "That's not who I am as a person and that's not who I pride myself on being. I don't know what to think."
"Do you remember doing it," asked King.
Brown's eyes zipped to the side. "No."
Apparently, Brown still loves Rihanna. He said so during the interview. So it has to be a love so rich, so pure, that it's obliterated any memory of the attack, with the flashes of cuts and bruises and swollen lips fading away faster than his Wrigley deal. "Wow, I can't believe that actually happened," said Brown about the police photo of an injured Rihanna.
I can't believe this interview actually happened.
Brown's woe-is-me act - with his mom by his right side, playing the role of a baffled bystander whose son has "never been violent" - was almost an insult to those of us following his case for months. With years of television-interview experience behind him, King had to know that a flat-out confession from Brown was slim at best - especially with Brown's attorney, Mark Geragos, sitting in on the conversation. It all played out like a ratings go-getter that kept Brown's face on national television - period.
Still, Brown has already been charged with felony assault, and been sentenced to five years probation with six months community labor. It's a rap on the knuckles, but hey, it might give him room to recall the details of that early Sunday morning. They may be hazy to him now, but believe me, the fans who cherish him dearly will never forget.
