Calling all hip hop practitioners, it's that time again. Remember back in the day when we all use to crowd around the tube as our favorite Hip-Hop and R&B acts would spell the beans on losing their shirts in the music industry? Well it's about to be open season all over again but with a much happier ending. I'm sure the haters are already frowning but sometimes you have to roll with the punches. VH1 will resurrect a former staple in the network's programming, Behind The Music.
Now this time the glass will be half full or should I say abundantly over flowing with the shows new hip hop heavyweights lined up to supply their tales. That's right we want be hearing any sob stories like MC Hammer dancing his fortune down the drain or TLC bankrupting Wall Street. Instead get ready to hear the powerful depictions of fame fortune and beyond with Lil Wayne, 50 Cent and more.
The Emmy Award-nominated and critically acclaimed series Behind The Music defiantly was one of the first of its nature to show the world why the music business is a business that must be treated accordingly. VH1 executive VP of original programming Jeff Olde says, "It felt like the time is right. There are all sorts of new artists on the scene who have emerged and have these great stories. And there's other artists that we always wanted to do the first time around." "We always hear about the show, even now. It's amazing how much affection viewers have for it." VH1 says they'll be updating the format just slightly, but most of the show will stay the same. Jim Forbes will still be the narrator, but updated footage will be added to make the show look more current. Olde says, "I'm leery about changing certain elements. I think the audience will be mad if we mess with it too much."
First up to bat will be the story of Lil Wayne. The self-proclaimed "best rapper alive" opens up about his childhood, his music, and his struggles, as he and the people who know him best describe his ascension from a poverty-stricken childhood in New Orleans to his reign as one of Hip-Hop's heavy hitters. Next you should keep an eye out for 50 Cents episode.
According to ThisIs50.com, 50's segment focuses on the life and career of the controversial rapper, airing on October 13, fans will get an inside look at 50's world and hear from him and the people who know him best. Fif talks about what it was like to lose his mom at a young age, his arrests and surviving being shot nine times in 2000. The special also features friends and mentors who have helped to shape 50's life and career, including Eminem, who was one of the only people not afraid of the rapper's dangerous image after the shooting. Em said he recalled hearing Fif's music and feeling like he couldn't even compete, thinking, "This 50 sh--... I quit." Fif also elaborates a bit on the several high-profile feuds and beefs he's had over the span of his career.
Unlike VH1's regular programming of drama filled exploits like Real Chance Of Love the re-launching of Behind The Music will certainly bring forth an educational mound of material for those anxious to enter the entertainment world. The iconic series that helped put VH1 on the map will premiere on Thursday, September 10 at 10/9c with Behind The Music: Lil Wayne.
