If Drake's Forever fails at being "one of the greatest collaborations in hip-hop history," it's at least the most talked-about collaboration this year. Lil Wayne, Kanye West and Eminem, all appearing on the same track, is a hip-hop first. Sadly, it doesn't sound like the stuff of legend.
For the most part, everyone does what they do well: Weezy has his gruff, stream-of-consciousness poetics; Eminem tries to stay ticked; Kanye is still demanding his respect; and Drake is pushing past his boyish looks with man-sized lyrics ("I'm about my business/killin' all these rappers you would swear I had a hit list"). But the track is slated to appear on the soundtrack to the LeBron James documentary, More Than A Game, and gives the impression that Forever is less about the movie (or basketball) and more a reference to the supposed immortality of these rap stars.
Big names coinciding with big business - that's truly forever. I get it. And others get it, too. I'm just not sure I'm going to buy it.
