Most of us couldn’t even imagine going blind. Out of all of our five senses, perhaps the gift of sight is the most treasured of them all. While most of us would barely be able to muster up the strength to live in a world full of darkness, many extraordinary people like Rock and Roll Hall of Fame musicians Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder turned their setbacks into milestones in music history.
In the same way that these exceptional individuals won the hearts of fans from the grassroots “chitlin” circuit to superstardom and beyond, Baltimore-born, Virginia-raised blind rapper NovaCain is on the fast track following in their same footsteps.
Within three short years as a solo artist, he has garnered almost two million online streams of runaway singles “I Shoud Have Went to College” and “Ray Charles is Back.” And with his latest single “Swag Killin’ Everything,” NovaCain officially makes his intentions known in the music business.
Hello NovaCain! Before we talk about your music, let us know which city you rep and how the Hip-Hop scene is there?
Hi, thank you for taking the time to chat with me. I’m from Evansville Indiana. The Hip-Hop scene is almost non-existent, but I’m going to change that.
What was the moment that you knew music was your dream?
I knew music was my dream when I dedicated a lot of time learning how to write music in my head. No one would put that much time and energy into something they aren’t destined to do.
How did the environment you grew up in influence your music?
Growing up, both my eldest brother and my youngest brother created music, so you can say it runs through my blood. It also helps that music has always been around me.
Where do you get your influences from when crafting music in general?
A lot of my influence comes from Wiz Khalifa, but my in your face cocky demeanor stems from listening to Lil Wayne.
So NovaCain is your rap moniker, how did you come up with that name?
I’m from northern Virginia, so “Nova” is a combination of the words “northern” and “Virginia.” Since I’m blind and walk with a blind cane, I decided to incorporate it into my name as “Cain.”
For those who are not familiar with you yet, how would you describe your sound?
My sound is very in your face and fun. It’s highly influenced by southern hip-hop.
What would you say sets you apart from other up-n-coming rappers or groups in the game at the moment?
Other than my blindness, I’m different because I don’t have to use any vulgar language to make a catchy song. I’m like a modern day Will Smith with way more swag.
What do you bring to the table that hasn’t been heard and seen before?
I’m bringing blind culture to hip-hop. There has never been a blind hip-hop artist to chart on the Billboard chart and I plan to change that. I also want to break the stereotypes that have been placed on blind people. Just like there are sighted people that are weird, there are blind people that are weird too. There are blind people like myself who are swaged up, making boss moves and can do just as much as a sighted person.
What projects are you currently working on?
Currently, I’m focused on promoting my new single “Swag Killin’ Everything” produced by Don P from Trillville.
What is your label situation looking like?
I’m independent and I plan to stay that way, unless a label got the right bag [laughs].
Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?
In 5 years I see myself touring the world, possibly have a reality TV show under my belt, and modeling for some dope brands.
Anything else you would like to talk about?
The last thing I need say is no matter what you may lose in life, there’s always something to gain. I lost my mom, my dad, my dream of playing sports along with my sight, just to gain an opportunity to represent a culture of people that have been put down and neglected by pop culture. For the haters that sleep on blind people, just remember blindness is a culture not a disability. We’re coming!
