Jon-Oh! or Mr. No Condom as he is also known has been developing his fanbase via various online songs and videos for a short time now and it is surely only a matter of time before more people know of the name.
Son of a hustler, Jon-Oh! got an early taste for the good life and admits his exposure to such a lifestyle heavily influenced his work-rate today. Inspired by the head-nodding Hip-Hop beats of the 90’s, Jon-Oh! began to experiment with his craft writing lyrics at the tender age of ten.
Creator of the "No Condom" movement, this Charleston native already infected the genre with his unique and fresh sound on his blazing debut mixtape, Pre-Ejaculation.
How you doing Jon-Oh!? Please introduce yourself for the Yo! Raps readers...
I'm good, how are you? What’s up Yo! Raps audience? It's Jon-Oh! aka Mr. No Condom.
First things first, you had some pretty interesting parents right?
I mean you could say that! They owned a salon/barbershop. My mom, a skilled cosmetologist, would also sew wedding dresses for locals, and people who knew her. My dad man, he was known for miles for doing a cold Jheri curl, and if you were 'down' you could get more than a hair-dew!
In what way has your childhood affected your hustle today?
In a good way for sure. You know being exposed to money and its powers at such a young age, you get that understanding of how it works, leaving you always looking/finding more ways of acquiring it.
Was it hard to stay out of trouble coming from that sort of environment?
Shit yeah! I mean don't get me wrong, my people preached and promoted goodness, and righteousness, but at the same time your father's infamous for hustling, you had a taste of the good life!
What attracted you to rap and when did you first start writing?
I've got to say the beats, the actual music is what got me hooked on rap. Early 90's beats were so fresh! I started writing at about the age of ten or eleven.
What do you feel is key to becoming a successful independent rapper?
Having a business plan! It’s common for an artist to take an approach like, "I'm going to make good music and it'll speak for itself"… while that is true, there's still so many aspects, mainly business, of the industry that you must take into consideration also. The same type of business plan that applies to a sales business.
Who are your biggest influences, musical or social?
Well, socially I got a homeboy that owns a successful clothing company who inspires me a lot. Then, there's my brother and producer who introduced me to Hip-Hop/Rap in the first place.
If you were only allowed to pick three musicians to listen to for the rest of your life who would it be and why?
That’s a hard one! Erykah Badu for sure, because I've got to have my Neo-Soul/R&B, and she defines it. Also, she's so well-rounded. Andre Nickatina because he's a seasoned vet. Another well rounded artist, I could pop him in no matter what mood I'm in. Last but not least George Clinton and that one should be self-explanatory, can't have music without him.
I came across your "No Condom" campaign video on YouTube. Explain the whole "No Condom" concept to our readers.
When you hear the term "No Condom" you think, raw, unprotected, infectious, pregnancy, and that's exactly how I feel about my entry into this rap game. I'm about to infect it with this sick raw sound I'm "cum'n" with.
Chris Brown or Drake?!
I fuck wit 'em both, they good at what they do.
What distinguishes Jon-Oh! from all the other hungry up and coming emcees?
I don't fall into a category and genre. I truly have a different sound and style. A lot of times you hear that, then when you actually hear the person, they sound and look like so and so, but with me I honestly own a fresh new sound and style.
How would you describe your sound?
I'd describe it as Hip-Hop, rap, and spoken-word being stirred together with other natural flavourings and then baked at 400 degrees.
What can our readers expect to see/hear from Jon-Oh in the future?
Well, download my mixtape, Pre-Ejaculation, on DatPiff.com! You can also expect the No Condom: The Album after that. Maybe a few more videos, interviews... they just gotta stay tuned!
