Delta 14Though Delta 14 may be performing in shows now all around Ontario when his dream to be a rapper started he could have never pictured this. Born in Nairobi, Kenya, Delta says he wasn't exposed to music at all. It was only until he moved to England when he was 5 years old that he was introduced to rap and his dream of becoming a famous rapper started. Already three albums deep, Delta just released his 4th solo project titled The Journey. Now living in Canada, Delta's confidence is shown right from the start on the intro of his album as he professes, "Welcome, to a masterpiece".

What is the meaning behind your artist name Delta 14?

Well basically when I was 14 a lot of things changed mentally for me. The most important change being what I was going to do with my life, which became being a rapper (even though I had been writing rhymes for a while). Since the sign for the word Delta means change in most sciences I thought it made sense, since I changed at 14.

What is the Hip-Hop scene like in Toronto?

Okay now let me just say something before I answer the question... Even though I make rap music I don't tend to listen to it very much thus my view of the Hip-Hop scene is not the greatest in general.

What I can say is that K-OS is an artist that I admire because he hasn't compromised his artistic values irrespective of how successful he has been and the same can be said for K-Naan and Drake so in general I'd say the Toronto rap scene is the same as any due to the fact that in every city in the world there are talented rappers who will stick to their ideals and obviously others who will quite simply follow a trend.

Tell me a little bit more about your 4th solo album The Journey

The Journey for me began as an idea. An idea that was meant to embody the places I've been in the world, the people I've met and the people I've been with. Though it started out as that it turned into my Journey through the different facets of rap that I could relate to and that I had actually experienced. That's why you might find songs about loss or love or even clubbing on the album but not about myself being a gangster simply because I never have been.

Where will it be available for purchase and when will it be released?

It has actually already been released and is available in Canada nationwide in all retail stores. Also on iTunes, Napster, Amazon...basically every internet venue where music can be downloaded.

Are there any guest features and who are some of the producers that your fans will be able to hear gracing the album?

To be honest we keep everything in-house. My producer Cc and myself have been working together for so many years so the producers you're going to hear are Cc, myself and people we are closely knit with. As for guest artists he's actually the only other artist featured on the album...I guess we're greedy with our music. Then again though how many guest features were there on Illmatic?

What is the difference between this album and the other 3 of your previous albums? Do you think you have grown as an artist?

Firstly it would be sound quality. Apart from that though the older I've grown I've become more honest with my music. When I was younger I wanted to say, "Hey, look at me I've been in many fights","Oh I've been with many girls" but when I think back, how much does any of that even mean in a persons' life if you're doing it for a reputation? If you're not doing it from the heart what's it really worth?

The Explanation, Think Again, Honesty,  The Journey what is the importance to each of your album titles?

Each album title was meant to convey what I was trying to express. The Explanation was literally an explanation to my friends about why I acted the way I did. Always trying to be hard, always being ridiculous, drinking too much, hanging with people I had no business hanging with, general nonsense.

Think Again was me telling me them that I actually had thought again and Honesty was me trying to be honest though little parts of that "I'm so hard" guy still existed.

The Journey...that was the complete truth. I had accepted every facet of myself and what better way to express every facet than in a journey through the parts of rap that I could relate to?

As you are releasing The Journey, you are already working on another album titled Nuestra correct?

Actually Nuestra has been finished for quite sometime now, it's just the recording of the songs that has been taking a while due to finding time to get in the studio...I've actually made the beats and written the lyrics for 2 more albums after Nuestra so there's a lot of material to be laid down. I'm happy to say though that the two singles from Nuestra are ready to go. One is titled Alive and the other I.

You were born in Kenya, has music from there (if at all) influenced you in any way? How would you best describe your style of music?

The answer to this is most definitely going to piss off every Kenyan person but I quite honestly have never, ever listened to Kenyan music. The reason is that when I moved to England for a couple of years when I was 5 I forgot the language. When I got back the little I could understand of what I was hearing made no sense. How can you make basically every song about partying or women when no matter what neighborhood you go to you'll find a slum next door? Now please understand I don't mean to be abrasive but when a slum like a place called Kibera exists where there are more than a million people living without sewers, literally going to the toilet in the streets how can you not make socially conscious songs? How?

As an artist, what are some of the goals you want to achieve with your music? Are you currently with any labels, or management?

I actually would be happy with just being able to touch people with my songs. That is one thing I believe lasts forever but I can't lie it would be nice to make enough money to take my mom on a cruise. As for record labels or management I handle all of that myself at the moment.

List some of your biggest accomplishments so far in your music career?

Though I know it would be nice to say that I performed with Lil Wayne, Drake or an amazing other artist but the fact is that I haven't. Thus for me it's the fact that I was able to learn how to produce, mix, master and write my own music without any prior schooling in any of them.

Thank you for the interview, where can our Yo! Raps readers find out more about you?

Firstly I need to thank everybody at Yo! Raps much more for this opportunity. As for where to reach me or find out more about me I think the best place would be at my website www.delta14.com.
