L.A. Reid's position as Def Jam CEO may be in jeopardy. After the media's heavy criticism for his recent signing of emcee Shyne, it was reported Reid failed to show up to an engagement where he would be designated to speak and answer questions about the stability of his position.
Attendees of Billboard Magazine's 2010 Music & Money Symposium paid up to $1,000 only to be disappointed by the execs "no show."
A few hours before the event, which was held March 4 at the St. Regis Hotel in New York City, Reid made a last minute cancellation, claiming his child was sick. Rumors permeated shortly after, accusing Reid of pulling out to avoid interrogations regarding his future at Def Jam, after having recording low sales and making several questionable deals.
In February, L.A. gave rapper Shyne a $5 million deal to re-sign with Def Jam. Because Shyne is unable to enter the U.S. due to his immigration status, Reid went to the extent of flying to Belize to solidify the contract; a questionable act considering Shyne was dropped from the label in 2004.
Reid's associates have stated his position is stable, and a new signing can be expected in the near future, who has been rumored to be Jennifer Lopez.
