Akon Yo! Raps has learned that Akon has been recruited to work on the soundtrack of next year's FIFA World Cup.

"I've been hired as musical director for the World Cup," he says adding that "it's a great honor" to be involved in the project.

The 2010 Fifa World Cup will take place in South Africa and Akon, who is a Western African origin, will attend the tournament.

"I'm the official music co-ordinator. It means I'll produce the official World Cup song and I'll oversee all the official music," he added.

It is not clear it yet whether Akon will perform as an artist or sit behind the production table.

"If David Beckham said he wanted to contribute musically, I'd advise him not to. He'd definitely be better off playing. It doesn't work when athletes try to become musicians," Akon jokingly continued.

2010 FIFA World Cup is scheduled to take place between June 11 and July 11, 2010 in South Africa.
