There seems to be lot of good press surrounding Kid Cudi's debut album, Man On The Moon: The End Of Day.
Adjectives like "fresh", "hypnotic" and "intriguing" are all popping up in publication after publication. So I'm trying to decide whether or not my own hesitation to own this album - or even listen to it for the first time - is silly.
On one end, I think tracks like Day N Nite and Pursuit Of Happiness are intriguing, like many journalists have said. Otherworldly production, lightly-robotic vocals, indie-circuit guest spots (MGMT, Ratatat): It's actually kind of nice. This is rap that I can relax to, which is not always easy to find.
Then again, when I hear other writers and bloggers classify the album as "emo rap", I begin to cringe, mainly because it does, indeed, sound like emo rap. And truth be told, I began to write off emo a while ago. Who wants to hear that whining and complaining all album long? Not me. The last artist of this kind I was listening to now and again was Atmosphere, and I think I've written him off, too.
What do you think?
