Introduced into the scene as Puff Daddy, then morphed into the New York crooner P. Diddy, somehow became Puffy, dropped all things P and was just known as Diddy and as the circumference comes to a close, Sean emerges upon us as his birth name. Diddy is a man of many monikers but his business ventures surpass all of them put together.
His latest addition, Making His Band has been launched on MTV and the world once again gets an insight into the madness that makes Diddy into Sean. He claims with the release of his newest album, Last Train To Paris, audiences will get to finally know him as Sean. I don't get it either but one thing to wonder about the many faces of Sean is has his branding through reality TV shows hurt Bad Boy Entertainment's image.
Bad Boy was looked up to as the premier label with great talent. 112, Biggie, Total and Mase were some of the greatest acts in rap and R&B that were signature in their art. Now in exchange we get Day26 as the promise of the label, some Sean Jean polo shirts and a chance to audition for Diddy's next reality show?
I'm not hating on Diddy but something needs to change in what priorities matter most. Music only seems to be on top when the chance of a new reality show opens up. Even that doesn't promise new talent as the bands are broken via fighting, fleeing back home (Fredrick) or by the boss himself. Sean John is something that is kept behind the scenes as it should.
I admire Diddy for building his empire but all I'm asking is to have balance among your ventures. Don't lose interest in one and praise the other so highly. I hope that Making His Band increases the strength in the music arena because Bad Boy could use the help.
