Hailing from MTV's hit reality TV show Rob Dyrdek's Fantasy Factory; Chris Pfaff aka Drama is creating a factory of his own within the reality of music. After endless TV entertainment including Rob & Big, Drama is spreading his wings and representing his flare within music production and DJing, educating his ambitious mind across all aspects of entertainment. Having already worked with some of the finest chart topping stars including Chris Brown and Snoop Dogg, the "Young & Reckess" entrepreneur has independently established his name within TV, fashion and prosperously music. Drama has his sights firmly set and shares his very own fantasy factory with Yo! Raps.
Hi Drama how you doing? How's your week been?
It's been really good, a bit hectic but last night was the release of the new Fantasy Factory series
How were the views?
It went really well, it's a relief when you've been working so hard to finally have it launched on TV
And this was your final filming?
Yeah but realistically we will probably be shooting for the next month, so maybe like day a week here and there we'll be filming things that we have missed. We're doing some stuff with the air force next week going up in fighter jets or something crazy like that, we just couldn't fit it in our normal schedule
It all looks like fun?!
Yeah it's definitely an experience of a lifetime, it gets a bit taxing when your filming everyday and you're like I don't wanna have fun no more! [Laughs] It's like man I just wanna sleep for a day!
Well it looks like you won't be getting much sleep during all these music projects?!
Yeah that's the problem; I've been trying to juggle both right now. It's usually TV during the day, music at night
Do you have any further plans to shoot more reality TV shows?
We will probably do another 2 more seasons of Fantasy Factory, I mean my ultimate goal is to have my own show afterwards but that's all still up in the air. If everything goes to plan I will be filming for a few more years
Wow, doing all that as well as music you definitely won't be getting any sleep!
I know! [Laughs]
Okay, so let's take it back. When did your interests in music start?
Making a long story short my Dad was a drummer in a band that traveled the world before I was even born. He had drum sets all round the house and although he kind of retired from that when me and brother were born he would always play with the church band and was doing all that kind of stuff all my life. My biggest problem was I liked it bit there was no cool fun outlet for it at the time. The only choice was being in the High School band or some kind of other school band which wasn't very cool! So I took a break from it for a while and I moved out to L.A and I was shown the whole music production side of things and that's what rekindled my interests, and there were more cool fun outlets for it out in the L.A
So did you start DJing around this time as well?
I actually only just recently got into DJing, I started about 6 months ago
Where have you been DJing?
As of right now I just have a little set up in the Fantasy Factory and I'm just trying to work on my skills. I have a couple dates planned in Vegas next month and one after that but I really want to make sure my skills were on point before I took it anywhere
So you're still kind of developing this craft?
Yeah. If you see that guy from the TV who shows up at a club calling himself a DJ and just presses play from an iPod - it's not good!
What music genres are you spinning?
Well really in production and DJing I'm into that Top 40 Rock, R&B and even some Pop. We were just in studio last night producing a Rock song for BC Jean who is signed to Sony. It's kind of a Pink style mixed with Avril Lavigne, anything you hear on the Top 40 radio that's the kind of stuff that I mix
Who else are you working with production wise?
Right now I'm really kind of scattered across the map. I'm in with Chris Brown working on a new record. I'm working with Snoop Dogg and also trying to get a couple of tracks on The Game's new album. I'm all over the map anything from Rock to Chris Brown to Snoop Dogg
How would you describe your style of production?
I always go for those hit kind of records, fast paced, stuff you hear in a club. A lot of drums obviously because of my background and catchy kind of happy track
How have you seen yourself develop as a producer since you first started out?
The main thing about producing is not necessarily the music but figuring out how to all the other stuff like computer programs, mixing, how to work all the equipment and that has been night and day for me. When I first started out I had no idea, if someone would set it all up for me I could do it but other that I had no idea how to do anything else. So I've been working really hard on that side of it. I've also been trying to educate myself on the business side of it because what my main goal is to set this all up as more of a production company as opposed to me by myself. My ultimate goal is to have 3 or 4 producers working under my company with a couple of songwriters and then eventually a couple of artists. I've just signed my first producer 2 months ago but before I go too hard on that I have to really educate myself on the business
So you're looking into building up a little empire?!
Yes exactly. I'd love to eventually turn that into a label, something real long lasting and cover more ground
Obviously being part of the reality TV shows has helped raised your profile within the entertainment industry, what have been the main obstacles you've faced?
It's a catch 22. The production world people know you because you're on a reality TV show but I almost believe there is a somewhat a curse to it in the sense that people see you on TV they expect you automatically to be a gimmick. You know when I first got in with Chris Brown, he knew me from TV and knew I produced but he came to the Fantasy Factory to hang out, so when we went in studio and took him through the music he was like, "Man I had no idea that this is the kind of production you have!" So I feel that's the main obstacle - it's kind of in everyone's ears and eyes but they kind of expect you to not be good at it. I feel like once I can get over that hurdle of where the music industry knows I produce good music then I will be good to go
How do you compromise your music with what's already in the charts? Every producer wants to have a distinguished sound, how do you adapt that when you're working with an artist?
I'm constantly researching into what's not, checking out Billboard seeing what the Top 10 radio singles are and constantly listening to other peoples music the trick is really to be able to pull from that and pull in that inspiration and still consider what you like doing with your own stuff
So which artists are you really feeling right now?
Drake. I really respect him and his music. He had hit radio plays and videos before he was even signed to any label and that's what kinda everybody has been saying that's where the music business is going, where you don't really need labels no more because of the internet and stuff. I mean it's just really insane how far he was able to make it without signing to a label and when he did he got the most insane deal because he had already had built up success on his own
That must really inspire you as well as you're looking to raise your profile as being independent as well, it proves you can do it on your own...
Yeah exactly those are the things that are pointed out at every meeting that I have or game plan. It kind of always goes to that as far as not needing labels anymore and you can do it on your own. Drake is def an great example of that as he was really the first person to be able to do that
As well as building up your music empire you also have a clothing brand, Young & Reckless, how did all that come about?
It's only been official for about 6 months as far as getting a deal and having distribution. It was something that I was always in to and my main goal is to be able to cover multiple aspects within entertainment and mould all that together and build an empire so that was something I was always in to and it kinda worked out. The way I see it is out here in L.A and all the major cities the whole street wear thing is very very popular, you know. Everyone turns up at a store at noon to get 1 out of 100 t-shirts so they can have one of those exclusive shirts. Really my goal is to also make a brand like that but be able to take it to the mainstream, keeping it cool but making it available to all the cities and states
You're overly ambitious, it's surprising you find the time for all this!
Yeah I'm trying!
Are you still skateboarding?
I do actually thankfully because of the work at Fantasy Factory, I'm there everyday regardless so with it all being available I can take a break between studio sessions and just skate for a little bit. But really if it wasn't all in one building who knows!
I'm going to let you get on with your day. Thank you so much for taking time out for us and I wish you the very best.
Thank you so much!
